Tampa Bay Comic Convention 2025 wrapped up its three-day run at the Tampa Convention Center from August 1–3, and fans are already feeling the familiar wave of “con blues.” Each year, the convention builds on its reputation as one of Florida’s premier pop culture gatherings, but this year’s edition stood out for its smooth organization, exciting guest lineup, and unforgettable atmosphere.

From the moment attendees entered the convention hall, the layout made a strong impression. The vendor area stretched across the main floor with row after row of collectibles, comics, and unique merchandise for every fandom. To one side, horror fans were drawn to the Scaradise booth, which gave a taste of its October fright-fest by showcasing memorabilia and horror icons. Celebrity guests were thoughtfully placed in their own section, which kept traffic moving while still allowing for intimate fan interactions.

The celebrity roster in 2025 was one of the strongest in recent memory. Henry Winkler charmed audiences with stories from his long career, while Melissa Joan Hart delighted longtime fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Zachary Levi, Cary Elwes, and Ben Barnes were major draws, and John Rhys-Davies captivated the crowd with tales from his iconic roles in Indiana Jones and The Lord of the Rings. Beloved voice actors like Lenore Zann and Keith David also appeared, adding to the excitement and diversity of the lineup.

Panels this year offered more than simple Q&A sessions—they felt like immersive experiences. Steve Burns, forever remembered as the original host of Blue’s Clues, gave a heartfelt talk that resonated with both adults and families. A lively X-Men ’97 panel with Lenore Zann revealed behind-the-scenes details about the revival series, while Catherine Bell and James Denton reunited to discuss their time on Good Witch. Gaming fans were treated to a special panel with voice talent from Baldur’s Gate 3, where stories about recording sessions gave insight into one of the year’s most popular RPGs.

Of course, cosplay remained the heart and soul of the convention. Every corner of the convention center buzzed with creativity as fans donned elaborate costumes representing heroes, villains, and cult-favorite characters. Cosplay meetups brought together communities around shared fandoms—from anime enthusiasts to Star Wars legions—while the official costume contest showcased both craftsmanship and performance. For many attendees, the cosplayers themselves became the highlight of the show floor.

Beyond the main attractions, Tampa Bay Comic Convention also provided space for creators and fans to connect in more intimate ways. Artist Alley was filled with independent comic book talent, illustrators, and authors sharing their work directly with fans. Workshops and panels covered everything from writing techniques and animation insights to discussions about horror cinema and the evolving state of modern storytelling. The balance of big-name guests with grassroots creativity is part of what gives the convention its lasting appeal.

As the weekend came to an end, many attendees were left with the bittersweet feeling that comes from leaving a world built entirely around shared passions. Tampa Bay Comic Convention 2025 wasn’t just a chance to meet celebrities or shop for collectibles—it was an experience where fans became part of a larger community. With another successful year in the books, excitement is already building for what 2026 will bring.

“Karate Kid: Legends” is a masterful continuation of the beloved Karate Kid saga. Seamlessly tying together the original films, the 2010 reboot, and the hit series “Cobra Kai.” This film is a nostalgic yet fresh take on the classic story, bringing together characters and themes from all iterations of the franchise.

Blending the Legacy

One of the standout aspects of “Karate Kid: Legends”, it honors the legacy of the original Karate Kid films. Fans of the 1984 classic will appreciate the numerous callbacks to the moments and characters that made the original so special. The film’s writer, Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit), does an excellent job of weaving in the teachings of Mr. Miyagi, reminding us of the timeless wisdom and values he imparted to Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

The 2010 reboot of “The Karate Kid” is given its due respect in “Karate Kid Legends.”. Jackie Chan returns as Mr. Han, whom moviegoers were introduced to in the movie. The film acknowledges the unique elements introduced in the reboot, the setting in China, and Kung Fu rather than Karate. This blend of martial arts styles adds a rich layer of diversity. Showcasing the beauty and discipline of both Karate and Kung Fu.

Karate Kid: Legends does a decent job of tying Mr. Han into the history of the Myagi family and Myagi Do Karate. Adding even more depth to the history of the franchise.

Sony Pictures

A Fresh Take on the Old Story

As the story begins to unfold, viewers of the original Karate Kid might get a feeling of déjà vu as we meet Li Fong (Ben Wong). A student of Mr. Han, Li is relocating from Hong Kong to New York City. His mother is taking a job there. Once in New York, Li meets Mia Lipani (Sadie Stanly). Mia works at the pizza place her father owns. He also meets Conor (Aramis Knight). Connor is Mia’s jealous ex-boyfriend, who happens to also be the current “5 Burroughs Karate Champion” and a jerk. Luckily for the moviegoer, this is where the story diverges and lets the viewer know that it’s not a retelling of the original Karate Kid.

Mia’s father, Victor (Joshua Jackson), a retired boxer, owes money to some “very bad people”, and when they come to “collect”, Li steps in. This is the first time we see Li in action, and you immediately see hints of the style that Jackie Chan is known for, such as using surroundings and lots of movement, and a bit of “that didn’t go as planned” fun.

Victor decides he must fight one more time so he can earn enough money to pay his debt. Li reluctantly agrees to help train Victor while facing demons from his past. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Karate Kid movie without a tournament action, and this entry into the franchise does not disappoint.

A Perfect Blend

One of the most exciting aspects of “Karate Kid: Legends” is the seamless blending of fighting styles. The film features a variety of martial arts techniques, each with its own unique flair. From the traditional Karate moves that fans know and love, to the fluid and graceful Kung Fu techniques, the fight scenes are a visual feast. The choreography is top-notch. Director Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not OK With This) does a great job showcasing the fast-paced action.

Final Word

In conclusion, “Karate Kid Legends” is a triumphant addition to the Karate Kid franchise. It successfully ties together the original films, the 2010 reboot, and “Cobra Kai,” creating a cohesive and engaging story that isn’t just a rehash of the original story, but honors the past while looking to the future. The film’s diverse fighting styles and well-executed action scenes make it a must-watch for martial arts enthusiasts and fans of the series alike.

How a Hero Took Flight and Changed the Face of Cinema

With the release of James Gunn’s Superman, I figured it might be fun to turn the clock back to 1978 and look at the superhero movie that is considered by many to be the first major Superhero movie to become a blockbuster, long before the MCU and DCEU.

Superman: The Movie – A Cinematic Milestone

DC Comics/Time Warner

Box Office Triumph: Flying Past Expectations

When Superman: The Movie hit theaters in December 1978, it didn’t just make an impact—it made history. With a production budget of $55 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. But audiences responded with overwhelming enthusiasm, and the film soared to a worldwide box office total of $300.4 million. Adjusted for inflation, that figure climbs to a staggering $1.44 billion, making it the highest-grossing Superman film to date. It was a box office juggernaut, proving that superhero stories could be both critically acclaimed and commercially dominant.

But the film’s success wasn’t just about numbers—it was about resonance. Viewers believed in the story, in the hero, and in the magic of cinema. Superman didn’t just fly—it lifted the entire genre with it.

Critical Acclaim: A Heroic Revelation

Critics didn’t just like Superman—they embraced it as a revelation. Roger Ebert called it “a pure delight,” praising its blend of adventure, romance, and wit. The Austin Chronicle hailed its smart screenplay and Christopher Reeve’s winning performance, declaring, “Believe a man can fly? You bet!” Variety described it as “a wonderfully exciting fantasy,” while The Globe and Mail proclaimed, “As gods go, Superman is one of the godliest; his movie is one of the best.”

Even decades later, retrospectives continue to celebrate its sincerity and charm. Critics admired how Richard Donner’s direction played the story straight, resisting the urge for camp and instead delivering a heartfelt, mythic tale. Yes, some noted its imperfections—like a few tonal shifts or an overlong prologue—but most agreed: Superman was a bold, beautiful leap forward for the superhero genre.

Superman Deserves a Super Cast

At the center of it all stood Christopher Reeve, whose portrayal of both Clark Kent and Superman set the gold standard—awkward charm on the ground, noble strength in the sky. Beside him, Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane wasn’t just fast-talking and fearless—she was captivating and real. Then came Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, weaving intellect and charisma into a villain who could make you laugh while plotting global chaos. And for a dose of mythic weight, there was Marlon Brando, bringing gravitas to Jor-El with every measured word.

Strong Support and a Few Surprises

Supporting this legendary ensemble, Ned Beatty as Otis brought light-hearted mischief, while cameo legends like Kirk Alyn (1940s serial) and Noel Neill (1950s The Adventures of Superman) gave longtime fans a wink of recognition. Even Larry Hagman (I Dream of Jeanie) appeared for a brief but memorable moment, grounding the fantasy with a splash of military humor.

The Creative Team: Crafting a Myth

Behind the scenes, the film’s soul was shaped by a remarkable writing team: Mario Puzo, the man behind The Godfather, whose storytelling brought scale and myth; David and Leslie Newman, who added warmth and wit; and Robert Benton, who ensured that even a hero from Krypton felt human. Their collaboration produced a screenplay that honored the grandeur and the intimacy of Superman’s journey from distant planet to the heart of humanity.

The Music: Giving Superman His Voice

And then… the music. The legend, John Williams, composed a score for the ages that didn’t just accompany the visuals—it defined them. The heroic march, the tender themes, the cosmic soundscape—all lifted the story to emotional heights few films ever reach. His compositions gave Superman a voice that echoed long after the credits rolled, making the mere sound of a few notes synonymous with heroism and hope.

Legacy: The Hero’s Cape Still Catches the Wind

Superman: The Movie isn’t just an origin story—it’s a celebration of hope, of identity, of what it means to rise above. It proved that sincerity could triumph in an age of cynicism, and it paved the way for every hero who followed. Decades later, its cape still catches the wind.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering the film for the first time, Superman: The Movie remains a testament to the power of storytelling, spectacle, and sincerity.

You’ll believe a man can fly.

Last Word:

I was a young child when Superman: The Movie hit theaters, and it had a long-lasting effect on me. I had a Superman poster on my walls for years following. The visuals may look like 1978, but the story itself and how it is told holds up almost 50 years later.

If you’re looking for a place to watch Superman: The Movie, it is currently available to stream via HBO (Previously HBO/MAX and MAX)

The contemporary horror landscape is a vibrant, often terrifying tapestry woven from diverse threads – psychological thrillers, supernatural hauntings, slasher revivals, and the enduring power of folk tales. Emerging today, April 15, 2025, onto digital platforms via Gravitas Ventures, is a film that seeks to carve its own unique niche within this tapestry: CALL OF THE VOID. Written and directed by James B. Cox, this chilling new release promises a potent cocktail of folk horror atmosphere, Lovecraftian cosmic dread, and a central mystery rooted not in sight, but in sound.

Following a discussion with Cox about his vision for the film, it’s clear that “Call of the Void” aims to be more than just another cabin-in-the-woods fright fest. It’s poised as a “sonic experience,” deliberately designed to unsettle audiences by weaponizing the very sense we often rely on for orientation and comfort.

Echoes of Grief and Unwanted Noise

The premise centers on Moray, portrayed by Caitlin Carver (known for her roles in Chicago Fire, I Tonya, and Netflix’s Dear White People). Reeling from the tragic death of her brother, Moray does what many seeking solace attempt: she retreats. Her destination is a remote mountain cabin, a place intended for quiet contemplation and escape – escape from work, from family pressures, from the crushing weight of her old life.

However, as horror often dictates, true escape is elusive. Moray’s hoped-for tranquility is quickly shattered by intrusions both mundane and menacing. First, the quintessential disruption: a boisterous college band moves into the adjacent unit, replacing silence with unwanted rhythm. More unsettling, however, is the presence of a suspicious professor studying a peculiar local phenomenon – a persistent, pervasive, and deeply mysterious “Hum.”

This Hum, Cox explains, is the film’s narrative and thematic core. It’s not merely background noise or a simple auditory plot device. Moray discovers it’s something far more sinister: a gateway, a threshold to something “otherworldly, unnameable.” And crucially, once truly heard, once it resonates within you, there is no turning back, no unhearing it. The film directly confronts the terrifying question: “How can you escape your own senses?”

Weaving Folk, Cosmic, and Sonic Threads

“Call of the Void” proudly wears its influences while forging its own path. Cox describes it as a “folk horror tale,” grounding its otherworldly elements in a specific, potentially isolated setting ripe with unspoken history (a common trope of the subgenre). This sense of place is further enriched by a unique musical element: the film features songs from the traditional Appalachian folk songbook, performed live by the cast members themselves. This integration promises an authenticity and raw emotional resonance, embedding the region’s cultural sounds directly into the narrative’s fabric.

Layered upon this folk foundation is a distinct vein of cosmic horror, drawing inspiration from the master of existential dread, H.P. Lovecraft. The “unnameable” nature of the Hum’s source, the idea of a gateway to realities beyond human comprehension, and the potential for sensory input to shatter one’s sanity all echo Lovecraft’s signature themes. It’s the horror of the unknown, the vast indifference of the universe, and the fragility of the human mind when confronted with things it wasn’t meant to perceive.

Perhaps most intriguing is the film’s billing as a “sonic experience.” Centering horror around sound offers fertile ground for innovation in a visually dominated medium. Cox seems intent on exploring how auditory phenomena – both the structured beauty of folk music and the unnerving presence of the Hum – can build suspense, create atmosphere, and directly impact the characters’ psychological states. This focus suggests that sound design will be paramount, potentially making the film a uniquely immersive (and disturbing) watch, especially with good headphones.

Behind the Vision: James B. Cox and His Cast

James B. Cox, pulling double duty as writer and director, is no stranger to genre filmmaking. His previous credits include Hacked and, notably, Grey Matter, an adaptation of a short story by horror maestro Stephen King. This background suggests a filmmaker comfortable navigating suspense, atmosphere, and character-driven horror. With “Call of the Void,” Cox appears to channel these sensibilities into a deeply personal and conceptually ambitious project, blending established genre tropes with innovative sensory gimmickry. Discussing the project, his passion for exploring these intersecting genres and the specific auditory hook becomes evident.

Bringing this auditory and psychological nightmare to life is a compelling cast. Alongside Caitlin Carver’s central performance as the grieving Moray, the film stars Mina Sundwall, familiar to audiences from Netflix’s Lost In Space and Jesus Revolution. Christian Antidormi (Starz’s Spartacus, Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer) and Ethan Herisse (Nickel Boys, When They See Us) round out the principal players tasked with navigating the encroaching dread and the haunting melodies. The live performance aspect adds another layer of challenge and potential authenticity to their roles.

Tune In, But Beware the Hum

Premiering at the respected Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, “Call of the Void” arrives on digital platforms today, April 15, 2025, distributed by Gravitas Ventures. With a runtime of 93 minutes and pointedly not rated by the MPAA (often suggesting filmmakers opted out of the rating process to maintain their unfiltered vision), it presents itself as a taut, potentially intense offering for discerning horror fans.

Photo Courtesy: James B. Cox / Call of the Void

For those weary of jump-scare reliant features or predictable plots, “Call of the Void” offers a potentially refreshing alternative. Its blend of folk atmosphere, Lovecraftian themes, a strong cast, live musical elements, and its central, unnerving focus on sonic horror makes it a standout prospect in the current indie horror scene. Can Moray confront her grief while battling a phenomenon that attacks her very perception of reality?

As James B. Cox has crafted it, the film invites you to listen closely. But be warned: once you truly hear the Hum, you might find it impossible to get it out of your head.

Purchase and rent links on https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/call-of-the-void-2025
