SDCC Hosts Panel, New gameplay trailer, and major announcement for Retroware’s Toxic Crusaders beat-’em-up!

This Saturday, July 26, indie gaming and gloriously gory cult cinema will unite for It’s Troma Time, celebrating the infamous cult studio’s 50+ year legacy. During the panel, which kicks off at 9PM PDT, studio co-founder and underground icon Lloyd Kaufman will deliver updates on his latest cinematic shocker, Troma’s The Power of Positive Murder. He’ll be joined by producer Andrew Miller, star Adam Peltier, and actress Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier, Return to Nuke ’Em High), as well as Mathew Klickstein, author of Lloyd Kaufman Interviews. The panel will be moderated by Megan Silver.

Capping off the panel, Retroware’s Creative Director Justin Silverman will debut a new gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated Toxic Crusaders beat-’em-up that expands upon the story of the cult classic ‘90s cartoon series. Following the trailer, Silverman will make a major announcement about the game, so you’ll want to stick around until the end of the panel!

Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. today announced its lineup of Gundam-related activities at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), one of the world’s largest pop culture and entertainment conventions. The event will take place in San Diego, USA, from Thursday, July 24 to Sunday, July 27, 2025.

At Booth #3829, the Bandai Hobby will showcase a special display celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Fans can explore a wide range of exclusive Gundam Wing merchandise and experience a statue of the iconic Wing Gundam up close.

“Karate Kid: Legends” is a masterful continuation of the beloved Karate Kid saga. Seamlessly tying together the original films, the 2010 reboot, and the hit series “Cobra Kai.” This film is a nostalgic yet fresh take on the classic story, bringing together characters and themes from all iterations of the franchise.

Blending the Legacy

One of the standout aspects of “Karate Kid: Legends”, it honors the legacy of the original Karate Kid films. Fans of the 1984 classic will appreciate the numerous callbacks to the moments and characters that made the original so special. The film’s writer, Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit), does an excellent job of weaving in the teachings of Mr. Miyagi, reminding us of the timeless wisdom and values he imparted to Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

The 2010 reboot of “The Karate Kid” is given its due respect in “Karate Kid Legends.”. Jackie Chan returns as Mr. Han, whom moviegoers were introduced to in the movie. The film acknowledges the unique elements introduced in the reboot, the setting in China, and Kung Fu rather than Karate. This blend of martial arts styles adds a rich layer of diversity. Showcasing the beauty and discipline of both Karate and Kung Fu.

Karate Kid: Legends does a decent job of tying Mr. Han into the history of the Myagi family and Myagi Do Karate. Adding even more depth to the history of the franchise.

A Fresh Take on the Old Story

As the story begins to unfold, viewers of the original Karate Kid might get a feeling of déjà vu as we meet Li Fong (Ben Wong). A student of Mr. Han, Li is relocating from Hong Kong to New York City. His mother is taking a job there. Once in New York, Li meets Mia Lipani (Sadie Stanly). Mia works at the pizza place her father owns. He also meets Conor (Aramis Knight). Connor is Mia’s jealous ex-boyfriend, who happens to also be the current “5 Burroughs Karate Champion” and a jerk. Luckily for the moviegoer, this is where the story diverges and lets the viewer know that it’s not a retelling of the original Karate Kid.

Mia’s father, Victor (Joshua Jackson), a retired boxer, owes money to some “very bad people”, and when they come to “collect”, Li steps in. This is the first time we see Li in action, and you immediately see hints of the style that Jackie Chan is known for, such as using surroundings and lots of movement, and a bit of “that didn’t go as planned” fun.

Victor decides he must fight one more time so he can earn enough money to pay his debt. Li reluctantly agrees to help train Victor while facing demons from his past. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Karate Kid movie without a tournament action, and this entry into the franchise does not disappoint.

A Perfect Blend

One of the most exciting aspects of “Karate Kid: Legends” is the seamless blending of fighting styles. The film features a variety of martial arts techniques, each with its own unique flair. From the traditional Karate moves that fans know and love, to the fluid and graceful Kung Fu techniques, the fight scenes are a visual feast. The choreography is top-notch. Director Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not OK With This) does a great job showcasing the fast-paced action.

Final Word

In conclusion, “Karate Kid Legends” is a triumphant addition to the Karate Kid franchise. It successfully ties together the original films, the 2010 reboot, and “Cobra Kai,” creating a cohesive and engaging story that isn’t just a rehash of the original story, but honors the past while looking to the future. The film’s diverse fighting styles and well-executed action scenes make it a must-watch for martial arts enthusiasts and fans of the series alike.

With the release of James Gunn’s Superman, I figured it might be fun to turn the clock back to 1978 and look at the superhero movie that is considered by many to be the first major Superhero movie to become a blockbuster, long before the MCU and DCEU.

When Superman: The Movie hit theaters in December 1978, it didn’t just make an impact—it made history. With a production budget of $55 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. But audiences responded with overwhelming enthusiasm, and the film soared to a worldwide box office total of $300.4 million. Adjusted for inflation, that figure climbs to a staggering $1.44 billion, making it the highest-grossing Superman film to date. It was a box office juggernaut, proving that superhero stories could be both critically acclaimed and commercially dominant.

I was a young child when Superman: The Movie hit theaters, and it had a long-lasting effect on me. I had a Superman poster on my walls for years following. The visuals may look like 1978, but the story itself and how it is told holds up almost 50 years later.

Screamboat follows a group of late-night Staten Island Ferry passengers in who find themselves trapped with a murderous, mischievous mouse—a corrupted version of the once-wholesome Steamboat Willie.

His energy and creativity make you want to focus on every scene he’s in for fear of missing something, all without saying a word..

It All Started with a Mouse

The film cleverly plays with the legacy of Steamboat Willie, the iconic 1928 short that introduced the world to Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie entered the public domain in 2024. Screamboat takes full advantage, twisting familiar into something twisted while paying tribute to the animated short that became the cornerstone of what would become “The House of Mouse”.

Meet the Crew and Passengers of Screamboat

Behind the film is Steven LaMorte, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Matthew Garcia-Dunn. LaMorte, known for his work on The Mean One, brings his signature blend of horror and humor to Screamboat, crafting a film that is terrifying and entertaining.
The supporting cast manages to bring some fun, memorable performances, with Kailey Hyman (Terrifier 2/3, A Man Called Otto) as Cindi, Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf, Jane the Virgin) as Radio Operator Mike, Jesse Kove (Cobra Kai, Magnum PI) as Lieutenant Diaz, and Jesse Posey (Selena: The Series, NCIS) as Pete. This is one of the matches that seems kind of silly to me. I’m not sure if it’s WrestleMania-worthy. I can’t see this El Grande Americano bit lasting much longer. My money says Chad…er..El Grande Americano gets unmasked during this match.

Jade Cargill vs. Naomi

WWE has been highlighting the sheer power and skill of Jade from the first day she made her main roster debut at the 2024 Royal Rumble. look for her to continue to win her way to a championship run.

LA Knight (c) vs. Jacob Fatu for the United States Title

This match should be a fun one to watch. I see LA Knight (Yeah!) retaining the title unless Fatu gets an assist from the Bloodline, which is extremely likely.

Gunther (c) vs. Jey Uso for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The feud here is strong (and bloody), even though it is for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship I don’t think Jey cares how he wins, so long as he beats the crap out of Gunther for what he did to Jimmy a couple of weeks ago.

My Pick: Jey Uso (even if he loses by disqualification, he wins)

Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Charlotte Flair for the WWE Women’s Championship

Although Tiffy is Over with the crowd, I find her skills both on mic and in the ring lacking (she always sounds like she reciting her lines off of a cue card). I think it will be on Charlotte to carry this match. I also think Tiffy may drop to Charlotte here.

Wrestlemania 41 Main Event: Saturday

Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk (w/ Paul Heyman) vs. Seth Rollins

This one is interesting to me because these three seem to be basically trying to win Paul Heyman. I’m not even sure which one of them is supposed to be the heel at this point. I almost don’t care who wins; what I do know is this will be one helluva “slobberknocker!”. Watch for Heyman to be pressured to act the entire match and get torn between allegiances and obligations.

WrestleMania Night Two, Sun., April 20

AJ Styles vs. Logan Paul

Admittedly, I’m trying to find a reason or purpose for this match beyond “Logan is over as a heel”. As of this writing, no title is on the line, and there isn’t an ongoing storyline with him. Logan does know how to put on a show, and I think his and AJ’s styles will complement each other very well in the ring. This could be setting up a future United States Champion defense match between the two down the road.

My Pick: Logan Paul (with “help”)

Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre in a Sin City Street Fight

These two should put on one hell of a show, I could see it overshadowing the main event. Even though this isn’t for any title, Damian has been on a mission to show that he can stand alone without the Judgement Day.

Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez (c) vs. Bayley & Lyra Valkyria for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles

If the matches leading up to this are any indication, this should be a wild one.

Bron Breakker (c) vs. Penta vs. Finn Bálor vs. Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental championship

They have pushed Penta hard since his WWE debut on Jan 13, and he has won almost every match. They seem to be leaning heavy into Lucha Libra representation on the main roster (Not counting Chad Gable.. I mean El Grande Americana). I would not be surprised to see him win here, I think WWE is getting ready to pass the torch to the next generation of Lucha Libra. I can also see the final break between Dominic and Finn taking place as the direct result of events during this match.

Rhea had to drop her belt due to injury, I see her winning here and rightfully getting the belt back.

Wrestlemania 41 Main Event: Sunday

Cody Rhodes (c) vs. John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Title

Although I can see Cena winning the title, I fail to see the purpose. I doubt they let him walk off into the sunset with the belt, as a heel to boot. I will add a caveat: if they do have Cena win the belt, he will drop it before his “final” match at a future PLE later this year.

Final Thoughts

As a whole, both nights of Wrestlemania look to have some exciting moments. Both nights’ main events look to be pretty solid matches. In fact, the whole card looks good. Kevin Owens and Randy Orton will be missed, though. I would not be surprised if we get a last-minute match-up with Orton since they’ve somewhat teased as much.
