The Playstation Logic

The internet went crazy on Sept 7th, 2020 the night Brad Sims leaked the Series S info. It spread like wildfire and for the next few days the excitement for Xbox was all over the internet. It wasn’t long though before Sony would try to steal that thunder in the most outrageous way.

On Sept 16th, 2020 Sony held their Playstation 5 Showcase. It was then and there that we learned about the cost of the PS5 Digital Edition and Disc Edition. The event was about to unfold an open pre-order no one was ready for. Before further information was even released on Sony’s take on “Generations.”

Not that long ago Sony stated they believed in “Generations,” meaning that each new console would not be held back by the previous console hardware and the games going forward would be for the new hardware. Before we get into all those details the event did discuss some important games lined up for next generation which will be listed below.

In The Order of Appearance on the event

  • Final Fantasy XVI – Release date to be announced
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 11/12/2020
  • Hogwarts Legacy – 2021
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha Multiplayer 9/18/2020-9/20/2020
  • Resident Evil Village – 2021
  • Deathloop – 2021
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition – 11/12/2020
  • Oddworld Soulstorm – Release date to be announced
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach – Release date to be announced
  • Demon’s Souls Remake – 11/12/2020
  • Fortnite Battle Royale – 11/12/2020
  • The Playstation Plus COllection – 11/12/2020
  • PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition – 11/12/2020
  • God of War Sequel – 2021

Then It Happened….

Sony opened pre-orders the night of 9/16/2020 at approximately 7 PM EST at various retailers. It turns out a lot of people went online or called GameStop to confirm if pre-orders were up and sure enough almost sold out within the hour everywhere they were available. The very next day I had gone to my local GameStop and waited in line before they opened their doors. A manager came out and told us that GameStop Corp was on the phone with Sony the night of the event with store managers and Sony gave the go ahead to open pre-orders starting at 7 PM EST.

There was more though that Sony failed to disclose during their event that should have been discussed. Let’s talk about “Generations.” Many gamers believed that new games like Horizon 2, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy would only run on PS5. Nothing was discussed prior to the event to make anyone think otherwise.

Then the Info leaked…

The event itself was a mess. There were so many mixed messages and by the time most fans found out pre-orders were already sold out and those who pre-ordered were not even aware that some of these new titles would have PS4 versions.

There were further issues with games like FF XVI stating it was coming to PC, as well as Demon’s Souls at some point in the future. After a large backlash online Sony said that was a mistake and it was never going to go to PC. You can read the retracted statement on many different sources but I will link one from VG247.

Going into next gen the roles are reversed this time. It seems Xbox has been upfront with their marketing and messaging while Sony has taken a 180 while not clarifying many things on their event before pre-orders went live. At least we know when Xbox pre-orders will be up. 9/22/20.
